THE CONTEXT
Following the deadly Hamas attack in October 2023, Israel’s violent military response resulted in the death of more than 42,000 civilians in Gaza, with injuries tolling over 97,000. It is estimated almost 2 million Palestinians have been displaced and forced from their homes as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Blockades led by Israeli forces have caused food, water, and medical shortages for Palestinians, creating a dire need for basic necessities.
THE CONTEXT

Student protests at more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States garnered widespread media coverage, heightening the call for U.S. involvement. We were inspired by these protests, and the resilient energy rooted in these demonstrations.

We drew inspiration from symbols of peace that have been influential in protests such as symbols of doves, olive branches, and watermelon slices. Our initial sketches were grounded in reinterpretations of these classic icons, pulling elements from Palestinian textile design and the idea of resilience and flight.
