THE CONTEXT
Following the deadly Hamas attack in October 2023, Israel’s violent military response has resulted in the death of more than 42,000 civilians in Gaza, with injuries tolling over 97,000. It is thought that almost 2 million Palestinians have been displaced and forced from their homes as a result of Israeli airstrikes. Blockades led by Israeli forces have caused food, water, and medical shortages for Palestinians, creating a dire need for basic necessities.
THE CONTEXT

As a result of the continued suffering and violence, protests erupted across the world in support of a ceasefire, bringing light to decades-long oppression faced by Palestinians. Student protests at more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States garnered widespread media coverage, heightening the call for U.S. involvement in the matter. We as a team were inspired by our own involvement in protests, and the resilient nature and energy rooted in these protests from our peers.

We drew inspiration from symbols of peace that have been influential in protests such as symbols of doves, olive branches, and watermelon slices. Our initial sketches were grounded in reinterpretations of these classic icons, pulling elements from Palestinian textile design and the idea of resilience and flight.
